The Penobscot Nation, with a team of NGO partners, has preliminary agreements in place to remove the two dams on the Little River in Belfast. These dams are the only obstructions on the Little River and much of the watershed is already in conservation status. This project would restore a complete free-flowing system for the benefit of multiple species and the local economy. The tidal wetland that will be restored by this project is reason enough to be excited.
This incredible project got the green light to apply for funding less than a week ago. They have been working feverishly with a group of incredible partners to bring this proposal together. This proposal also includes extensive public outreach and education, monitoring and restoration planning, a large group of dedicated partners, and a growing list of in-kind and matching funds.
They are humbly asking all to consider writing a letter of support for this extremely rare opportunity, or become a project partner with your own flavor of direct support. If you do have the time to create a signed letter on your own letterhead, please forward it directly to Dan McCaw dan.mccaw@penobscotnation.org. He will be handing off this proposal for submission next Tuesday, April 15th.
Asking all to do what you can to support this incredible chance to bring abundant life back to Little River, after more than a century of industrialization. Please share this invitation to anyone you believe may be supportive of such a project.
